FNAC Procedure

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology treatment in Mangalore

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) involves the use of a thin, hollow needle for removing samples of cells from fluid or tissue in a lump or an organ. This is generally performed for identifying the type of cells inside the lump found in a gland (in the neck like the thyroid gland) or the breast. It is a simple procedure for detecting cancer. The procedure involves the insertion of a thin, hollow needle via the skin into the organ or lump. A syringe is used by the doctor for facilitating the suction of cells into the needle. Fine needle aspirations are generally carried out without any complications. However, on some rare occasions, patients have reported bleeding, bruising and soreness at least for a couple of days. Post-procedure, no dietary restrictions are imposed on the patient and they can resume their routine activities. The patient usually recovers within 2 days after the completion of the procedure.

Pre Procedure:

  • If you are on blood-thinning medication, please inform your doctor.

During Procedure:

  • You are settled comfortably in an area where your privacy is respected throughout the procedure. You will be asked to change into a gown.

  • The doctor will clean the skin where the needle is to be inserted. In some cases you will also be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area.

  • A very thin, hollow needle with a syringe is gently inserted through the skin into the lump or organ. The doctor uses the syringe to help suck some of the cells into the needle by gently pulling on the plunger.  FNAC Biopsy Test in Mangalore is available at Manipal, book an appointment today.
