An ingrown toe nail is a condition that occurs when the corners or edges of the nails grow into the skin located next to the nail. This condition usually occurs in the big toe. A simple surgical procedure is generally recommended for removing the ingrown toe nail. This procedure is performed by a doctor who is assisted by a nurse at all times and generally takes around 10-15 minutes. Betadine solution is applied before the procedure to clean the affected toe nail which is followed by the administration of local anaesthesia.
An incision is then made by the doctor for removing the complete/partial nail-plate. In addition, a clean compression bandage is applied to the toe nail. After the completion of the procedure, the patient will be observed for 10-15 minutes and may be prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for mitigating the risk of infections.
