The transabdominal procedure is performed by inserting a needle through the abdomen and uterus and into the placenta where the fetus is forming.
During the test, a small sample of cells (called chorionic villi) is taken from the placenta where it attaches to the wall of the uterus. The sample can be taken through the cervix (transcervical) or the abdominal wall (transabdominal).
